A memoir, Criminals, was published by Counterpoint Press in the summer of 2018. I am also the author of two novels, All the Money in the World and All Will Be Revealed.

My work has appeared in The New York TimesThe Los Angeles Times, Smithsonian, The Paris Review, The Oxford American, Tin House, and other venues.

I've been a Fulbright Scholar in Taiwan and a Mombukagakusho Fellow in Japan. Other awards include O. Henry and Pushcart Prizes and fellowships from the North Carolina Arts Council, the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, and the Michener-Copernicus Society.

I usually teach at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, but in 2018-2019 Iā€™m at Hollins University in Virginia. I also direct MA thesis students at The LaSalle College of the Arts in Singapore and lead the occasional workshop at Catapult in NYC.

I am a contributing editor at The Harvard Review and Scoundrel Time.
